Broome Library Foundation History

1990's Studies and plans outline need for a new building for the Broome County Public Library
1998 Broome County Legislature endorses plan to build new building at cost of $7.8 million, but nothing for interior
1998 J. Donald Ahearn pledges $250,000 for new library but only if a foundation exists
1999 Broome Library Foundation is created in September
1999 Original goal is $3.5 million is established to complete the interior of the Broome County Public Library building
2000 New Broome County Public Library building opens in November
2000 Goal of $3.5 million is reached in less than one year
2001 Foundation partners with Excellus Blue Cross/Blue Shield to establish a family reading and literacy program
2001 J. Donald Ahearn Business Resource Center established with funds bequeathed in his will 
2001 The F.H. “Rudy” and Yvonne Lawson Computer Lab was created to provide free computer and internet access to the community with funds provided by the Lawson family and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

2002

Using funds from the Harriet Ford Dickinson Foundation, development begins on the greenspace adjacent to the Broome County Public Library
2002 Excellus, Friends of the Library and the B-Mets provide funds for a summer literacy program
2003 The Broome Library Foundation partners to bring NASA Space Days to the area
2003 J. Donald Ahern Business Resource Center begins business programs
2003 Catholic Charities Summer Reading Outreach Program established
2004 The Broome Library Foundation has raised over $5 million for area libraries
2004 The First Annual Spring & Summer Children’s Fair in conjunction with Excellus, the Friends of the Library and the B-Mets
2004 The Teen Volunteer Program is established to promote teen literacy and service throughout the summer
2004 Coordinated Broome County Public Library's month long centennial celebration in October
2004 Broome Library Foundation's Daria Golazeski, Lynne Lacey and Marj Olmstead receive New York Libraries Association recognition
2005 Business Development Resource Outreach Program is established with funds provided by the Ahearn Foundation, NBT Bank, and the Tioga County Department of Economic Development and Planning.  This program brings business programs, materials, and services to libraries throughout the Southern Tier.
2005 The Broome Library Foundation's Annual Mini-Grant Program is established providing grants to public libraries throughout the Southern Tier.
2005

Summer Reading Outreach Program is established in the Towns of Conklin and Union with initial funds provided by the United Way of Broome County.
